This week, according to the Google, we bring you strange Canadian by-laws, still on the books in Canada.
Shopping & Food Quirks
- The Penny Cap: Under the Currency Act, a store can legally refuse to take your payment if you try to pay for something over $0.25 using only pennies (though they are rare now). You also can't use more than $5 in nickels.
- The Margarine War: For a long time in Ontario and Quebec, it was illegal to sell margarine that was the same color as butter. It had to be unappetizingly white or a different shade so people wouldn't get "tricked" into eating it.
- Sunday Ice Cream: There is a persistent (though rarely enforced) old law in Ottawa that technically says you can’t eat ice cream on Bank Street on Sundays.
Grade 9 Micro - Ms McNeill’s grade 9 micro group will not be going to Holland College today.
Easter Seals: The Easter Seals Pie in the Face Fundraiser continues this week. Students can pay $2 to their homeroom teacher for a ticket. This event will take place on Thursday, April 2nd at noon in the cafeteria. Reminder there is a pizza party for the class with top sales.
Heritage Fair:
Anyone participating in the Heritage Fair, please see Mrs. Breedon at break in room 313
Agriculture in the classroom will happen Wednesday at lunch in Mr. Casey’s room.
Drama Club:
- Cast members can pick up their scripts today at lunch time in room 221.
- There will be two run-through rehearsals for all cast members before Easter: Friday, March 27, and Monday, March 30, at 12:00pm. Please bring your lunch and script with you and arrive promptly!
Music:
- Tuesday: Grade 9 Band at 7:40.
- Wednesday: Grade 7 Band at Lunch.
- Thursday: Grade 8 Band at 7:40 and Midnight Rockers at Lunch.
- PEI Schools of Rock Showcase is coming up on April 11 here at Birchwood. Both of our rock bands will be featuring tunes!
Yearbook
- Anyone in grade 9 who wants their original grad picture (instead of their retake) in the yearbook please tell Miss McGill by the end of the day. We need to send the names of students who would prefer their original image to the yearbook company as soon as possible.
- Reminder to get your yearbook orders in, we are down to the last few books and need to decide if we need to order more or not!
Ice Cream Treats will be on sale in the cafeteria Thursday at lunch time.
Art Club
- If you are interested in an 8-week Art Club with local artist Wayne MacDonald, please sign up on the sheet on the office window.
