According to the Google, Canada’s comic history is surprisingly legendary, boasting both the co-creation of Superman and one of the world's first female superheroes. Joe Shuster, a Toronto-born artist, co-created the "Man of Steel" and originally modeled the bustling city of Metropolis and the Daily Planet after the streets and newspapers of Toronto. Even before Wonder Woman hit the scene, Canada introduced Nelvana of the Northern Lights in 1941, an Inuk powerhouse who used the magic of the Aurora Borealis to fly and protect the North, cementing Canada's place as a true pioneer in the superhero genre. If you read superhero comics folks, there's a good chance that what you are reading was influenced by Canadian creators.

Today is EARTH DAY!!!!
A few small changes you can do in your everyday life is to embrace sustainable habits like recycling and composting your food waste. Reduce single-use plastics, choose eco-friendly products, reduce meat consumption, and opt for sustainable fashion and transportation.
Around this time in 2019 we had a teacher at Birchwood named Josh Underhay, who cared deeply for the earth and was running in the provincial election for the green party when he and his young son passed away suddenly. Therefore, this afternoon we will remember him and all he stood for. He was an incredibly caring individual, while also passionate about helping the planet. Today, let’s try to be a little kinder to everyone in remembrance of him.
At 1:50pm, grab your jackets and then head to your 5th period class. Please wait until your grade is announced to leave for a walk up to the farmer’s market memorial for Josh and his son. Turn around and head back to your 5th period class, where your teacher will show a video about earth day. Think about how you can be kinder to the earth today and a little more compassionate to others around you. And as Mr. Rogers said “Sometimes, all it takes is one kind word to nourish another person.”
